Foundational fetal cardiac imaging for OB sonographers
Our Standard Fetal Heart Training Program is designed for OB sonographers who want to strengthen their understanding of fetal cardiac anatomy and improve their ability to obtain screening‑level heart images during routine anatomy exams.
Topics covered
Training includes lecture + hands‑on scanning covering:
AIUM‑recommended fetal heart views for standard anatomy exams:
4‑chamber, outflow tracts, 3‑vessel view and trachea view-focusing on normal anatomy, required imaging planes, and common pitfalls.
Determining fetal situs
Understand how to accurately assess fetal left/right orientation, stomach position, cardiac axis, and overall thoracoabdominal layout to ensure correct interpretation of heart structures.
Recognizing common fetal heart defects and their sonographic appearance (Ex: AV canal, tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of the great arteries, etc.)
Review how frequently encountered congenital heart abnormalities may appear on ultrasound, including clues that suggest when additional imaging or referral may be needed.
Practical scanning tips to improve workflow and confidence
Receive guidance on probe maneuvers, patient positioning, dealing with fetal movement, and overcoming challenges to improve image acquisition and exam efficiency.
Image optimization for moving cardiac structures
Strengthen your ability to fine‑tune depth, gain, focus, frame rate, zoom, and cine settings-ensuring clearer visualization of rapidly moving fetal cardiac anatomy.
OBGYN‑credentialed sonographers interested in enhancing their fetal heart skills
Hold a current ARDMS OB/GYN credential (or equivalent)
Have at least one year of dedicated OB scanning experience
Comfortably scan pregnant patients independently
Can complete a routine fetal anatomy survey with confidence
Can manage fetal movement, maternal habitus, and challenging fetal positions
